Common Fireplace Problem

Gas Fireplace Won't Stay Lit

Why Does My Gas Fireplace Keep Shutting Off?

If your gas fireplace lights but then shuts off shortly after — or won't stay lit at all — it's one of the most common gas fireplace problems we see. The good news is that it's almost always diagnosable and repairable.

Gas Log Works diagnoses and repairs this issue for homeowners throughout Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Clayton, Wake Forest, Durham, and surrounding communities.

Common Causes

When a gas fireplace won't stay lit, the cause is usually one of the following:

  • Weak or failing thermopileThe thermopile generates the small electrical current that keeps the gas valve open. When it weakens with age or becomes coated with debris, it can no longer produce enough voltage to hold the valve open — and the fireplace shuts off.
  • Dirty or failing thermocoupleThe thermocouple is a safety sensor that detects whether the pilot flame is present. If it's dirty, worn, or out of position, it may signal the valve to close even when the flame is lit.
  • Dirty pilot assemblyA pilot assembly clogged with dust or debris can produce a weak, unstable flame that doesn't properly heat the thermocouple or thermopile — causing the fireplace to shut off.
  • Gas valve issuesIn some cases, the gas valve itself may be failing and unable to stay open reliably.
  • Wiring or connection problemsLoose or corroded wiring between the thermopile and the gas valve can interrupt the signal needed to keep the fireplace running.

How We Diagnose and Repair It

Every service call starts with a thorough inspection. We test the thermopile output voltage, inspect the thermocouple and pilot assembly, check the wiring, and evaluate the gas valve. Once we identify the cause, we explain the issue clearly and recommend the right repair — without unnecessary parts or upselling.

Most repairs for a fireplace that won't stay lit can be completed in a single visit.
