Gas Fireplace Thermopile Replacement
What Is a Thermopile and Why Does It Matter?
The thermopile is a small but critical component inside your gas fireplace. It sits in the pilot flame and generates a small electrical current — typically between 300 and 750 millivolts — that powers the gas valve and keeps it open while the fireplace is running.
When the thermopile weakens or fails, the gas valve doesn't receive enough voltage to stay open, and the fireplace shuts off — often shortly after lighting. A failing thermopile is one of the most common reasons a gas fireplace won't stay lit.
Signs Your Thermopile May Need Replacement
- Fireplace lights but shuts off after a few minutes
- Fireplace shuts off immediately after releasing the pilot button
- Fireplace works intermittently — sometimes stays on, sometimes shuts off
- Fireplace has become progressively harder to keep running over time
- Thermopile voltage tests below the minimum required threshold
How We Test and Replace the Thermopile
We test thermopile output voltage as part of every diagnostic visit. If the reading is below the minimum required for your fireplace's gas valve, replacement is typically the right solution. We also inspect the pilot assembly and thermocouple at the same time, since these components work together and are often serviced together.
Thermopile replacement is a straightforward repair that can usually be completed in a single visit. We use the correct replacement part for your specific fireplace model and test the system thoroughly before we leave.
Thermopile vs. Thermocouple — What's the Difference?
These two components are often confused. The thermocouple is a single-junction safety sensor that detects whether the pilot flame is present and shuts off the gas if the flame goes out. The thermopile is a multi-junction generator that produces the voltage needed to power the gas valve and operate the fireplace.
Many gas fireplaces use both. During our diagnostic, we test both components and recommend replacement only for the one that's actually failing.
